David Barnard • Engineer

When David was 9 years old, the right side of his brain was forever stirred, not by a fall from his bike, but from his grandparents enrolling him in classical piano lessons. Then at 13 he got his hands on his first piece of recording gear, a Roland keyboard. This mass of plastic, silicon, and copper could record multiple instruments, each on an individual track! David was hooked. At 16 he bought a Tascam 424 and an SM58. The hobby became a passion.

When it came time to think about college, finding a sound engineering degree was the primary objective. Texas State quickly made it's way to the top of a very short list (aided in part by a generous scholarship offer from the Mitte Foundation). It was a perfect fit.

As a senior at Texas State, David packed up the old Ford Exploder and headed to Nashville for an internship at Castle Recording Studios. There he was able to work as an assistant with quite a few great bands, including: PFR, Brad Paisley, Reliant K, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Nashville was a great experience, but the call of the Texas hill country was strong. Instead of taking a trip back to Texas for graduation, David packed up the Exploder once again and moved back to Texas.

Since studios are abundant, and jobs scarce in the the Austin music scene, David turned to real estate, the family trade. Lots of great life lessons, very little passion and creativity. Teetering on the edge of sanity, David called up an old friend from Texas State.

David is now the house engineer for Cristobal Studios.
